The Best Knitting Supplies

There are an endless number of knitting supplies out there. But I have dwindled it down to just a few products that you can keep and use for years to come.

The 6 things I recommend that every knitter gets to start out are:

  • This set of knitting needles on Amazon.com. It can be overwhelming to choose a pair of knitting needles that will work on most projects. With the Clover interchangeable knitting needle set, you don’t have to choose just one. You get 12 sizes with 5 cords.
  • These stitch markers on Amazon.com. Nearly anything round that fits over the knitting needle tip will work. But it is much easier to mark stitches with these colorful rings.
  • These needle point protectors on Amazon.com. The worst part of a knitting project is realizing you dropped a stitch. These will block your stitches from falling off your needles before you finish your project.
  • This crochet hook on Amazon.com. Picking up dropped stitches has never been easier with a crochet hook.
  • These tapestry needles on Amazon.com. Blunt tip needles are great for weaving in the ends of projects and stitching together crochet fabric. These are great because they have a bent tip which makes it easier to see the stitches you pick up. BONUS! You get a handy case to store all your needles.
  • This pair of scissors on Amazon.com. These are perfect because of how sharp they are. Snipping the ends of yarn tails is a breeze with these scissors.

Knitting Needles

Why I recommend the Clover Takumi Bamboo Interchangeable Circular Needle Set: I recommend this set of knitting needles because of how versatile it is. You get 12 needles made of bamboo (sizes US 3 – 15) and 5 cord lengths (16, 24, 29, 36 and 48 inches). That is 60 combinations! The set comes with a custom case to keep all your needles and cords organized for storage. To use them, you selece the needle size and cord length and screw them together for a complete pair of knitting needles.

I always recommend the bamboo circular knitting needles to beginners for a couple different reasons. First, bamboo is a great material because the wood keeps the stitches on the needles. The yarn won’t slide off as easily as it would with a metal pair. And secondly, I recommend circulars because they can be used for a wide range of projects. Circular needles can be used in place of straight needles because of the flexible plastic cable, while also being able to complete projects in the round.

Concerns: You should be aware that when you are knitting, the needles can loosen. So you will want to check your needles periodically so that you don’t lose any stitches.

Price: You can get this set for less than $100. This is a steal! As I mentioned, you get 60 combinations of needles. If you were to buy 60 different knitting needles priced on average of $10, you would pay about $600!

Stitch Markers

Why I recommend Clover Soft Stitch Ring Markers: This set of stitch markers comes with 30 aluminum pieces. There are 10 small rings that fit a needle size of US 0-5 and 20 large rings that fit a needle size of US 5-11. These should work for just about any project.

Losing count of stitches is a pain in the butt. No more counting back stitches after you use these markers. Just place the ring around the needle tip and slide into place. The ring will remain secure until you knit around back to it.

Price: Less than $10 and you get 30 soft ring markers that are reusable.

Needle Point Protectors

Why I recommend Clover Point Protectors Petit: I recommend these point protectors because they will fit a size US 0 – 10.5 knitting needle. You get two pairs. The pieces fit on the tip of the knitting needle and keep loose stitches from falling off the needle.

Price: A little less than $6. Worth it to keep from losing stitches off your needles.

Crochet Hook

Why I recommend the Boye Crochet Hook US Size H: I recommend this aluminum hook because it can aid you when you drop a stitch off your needles. The smooth metal will slide through the stitches easily to correct any mistakes. The US H hook can work with almost any weight yarn you will work with. If you don’t crochet or own any hooks, this is the one I recommend.

Price: Less than $5 for a perfect tool that is a great time saver.

Tapestry Needle

Why I recommend Tapestry Needles: The tapestry needles come in a set of eight with four different colors: red, yellow, blue and green. They all are made of metal and have a bent tip. Each needles measures approximately 2.75 inches and has a large eye to make threading easier. The bent tip needles are perfect for sewing pieces of crochet fabric together because you can see which stitches you are picking up. This is especially beneficial for amigurumi.

Needles can be hard to keep up with. This set of 8 needles comes with a plastic case so you can easily keep up with them. But, in case you do lose one, you have some to spare.

Price: The whole pack costs less than $7, so each needle is less than $1. This is a bargain price.

Scissors

Why I recommend Fiskars Softouch Micro-Tip Scissors: I recommend these scissors because they are small and easily portable. The scissors are on a spring and have a soft grip which make them easy to use. The small tip remains sharp and you can use it to make precise cuts.

These scissors have been a life long staple in my home. I grew up with mom using them for all her cross stitch or sewing projects. I still use them to this day to snip the ends of my projects. I am highly confident you will enjoy adding these to your stash.

Price: Regular price is normally $20. But many times they go on sale for about $12.
