Fundamental Crochet Stitches

All the fundamentals to crocheting are on this page. There are just a few stitches that you need to learn to crochet, the rest is just a combination of the various stitches.

How to Make a Slip Knot

Getting started is the easiest part. If you don’t know how to get the yarn on the hook, watch this quick tutorial.

The Chain (ch)

Every piece of crochet starts with the chain. Then the rest of the stitches are built on top of the chain. Watch a quick tutorial on how to make the chain stitch.

The Slip Stitch (sl st)

The slip stitch is the smallest in height of all the basic crochet stitches. It’s easy to do, just give the video a watch, but make sure to keep a loose tension with this stitch.

The Single Crochet (sc)

The single crochet is the next basic stitch. It adds more height per row than the slip stitch. The front side of a sc looks like a “v” and the back side looks like a Greek “pi” symbol.

US term: single crochet (sc)
UK term: double crochet (dc)

The Half Double Crochet (hdc)

The half double crochet is the next tallest basic crochet stitch. It’s a cross between a single crochet and double crochet. The back side of the stitch has a spiral line that goes along the back.

US term: half double crochet (hdc)
UK term: half treble crochet (htr)
