My Work Story

In 2013, I graduated high school. All I could dream about was travelling the world. Ultimately, I did the “responsible” thing and started college that fall. I studied math at the beginning, but eventually decided on engineering.

After a couple of years living at home, going to school and working 5 part time jobs, I moved to a big university. I transferred from the Joann in my hometown (one of my part time jobs) to the new city’s Joann store.

I enjoyed my time there because it ignited my fire for crafting again. School drained me and I was no longer feeling creative. But I was surrounded by seamstresses and quilters at Joann and they encouraged me to be creative again. I took up sewing and started crocheting again.

After almost a year working for Joann, I quit my job to study abroad. I moved to Spain in January 2017 and lived in Seville for 5 months. I absolutely loved every minute of it and I still dream of going back.

When I returned, I finished my bachelor’s degree the following year, sans job. I got the opportunity to intern with a great company the summer after I graduated. They weren’t hiring and I didn’t have another job lined up, so I decided to apply to my university’s STEM MBA program. I got in and completed that within a year.

During the MBA program, I started StudyAbroadExpress.com, a website dedicated to providing information for study abroad students so they have successful experiences. Can you tell I loved my time abroad? That was my introduction to internet marketing in 2019.

I liked the writing portion, but the research took forever. I moved that website to a side project and ultimately took the plunge to begin Sew Homey. I wanted to start a blog in the DIY/handmade business space because I am much more familiar with those topics. I wanted to do this for years, but it wasn’t until 2020 that I made it happen.

Sew Homey is now my full time focus. My goal each day is to provide useful information and advice for makers so they are encouraged to continue what they love.
